Beginner's Guide โ€” Tips & First Hours

AC Black Flag Resynced Beginner's Guide

AC Black Flag Resynced key art โ€” Edward Kenway in pirate gear Starting your pirating career? Here's what to prioritize in your first hours, based on the rebuilt systems in Resynced.

Before You Start

Choose Your Difficulty

Resynced has four separate difficulty settings: Combat, Stealth, Naval Combat, and Activities. Each has three levels: Forgiving, Intended, Hard.

  • New to action games? Set everything to Forgiving โ€” trophies and achievements are not difficulty-gated, so there's no penalty for playing on the easiest setting. You can change it anytime.
  • Played the original? Start at Intended. If a specific activity frustrates you, drop that one slider.
  • Want a challenge? Set Naval Combat to Hard โ€” storms and legendary ships are brutal.

Turn On Pathfinder

Open the map, pin a destination, and activate Pathfinder to see your route on the water. Or use Follow Sea (autopilot) to let the Jackdaw sail itself while you enjoy shanties.

First Hour Priority

1. Play on Forgiving Difficulty

Trophies and achievements are not difficulty-gated in Resynced. There is zero downside to playing on Forgiving โ€” it makes combat, naval, and activities more forgiving without locking you out of any rewards.

2. Unlock Kenway's Fleet (After Sequence 4)

Your first priority after Sequence 4: go to Great Inagua manor and unlock Kenway's Fleet. This is your passive income engine and the source of random Art Pieces via Brig Piracy missions. Free roam opens up fully after Sequence 4, though some islands remain story-gated.

3. Recruit Officers Immediately

Officers provide passive ship abilities โ€” they don't need to be in your active party to benefit the Jackdaw. Recruit them as soon as their questlines become available, even if you don't finish their full quest chains right away.

4. Capture Brigs for Art Piece Farming

Capture Brigs and send them on Piracy missions via Kenway's Fleet immediately. Brig Piracy missions are the only way to farm the 19 random Art Pieces needed for your collection. Save before accepting Fleet reports and reload to re-roll missions until an Art Piece drops.

5. Learn the Perfect Parry

The combat system rewards timing, not mashing. Wait until the enemy's weapon arm begins the downward swing, then parry. A perfect parry opens them for a kill.

6. Unlock the Rope Dart (Sequence 3)

The Rope Dart now unlocks in Sequence 3 โ€” much earlier than the original. It's useful for:

  • Pulling enemies from ledges
  • Stealth distractions
  • Melee crowd control
  • Hangman trophy: use the Rope Dart from trees or overhead beams to hang enemies

7. Manual Crouch is Your Friend

You can crouch anywhere now. Use it to:

  • Sneak through tall grass (watch the visibility meter)
  • Reduce detection range when infiltrating restricted areas
  • Avoid tailing mission failures (though failing no longer desyncs you!)

Jackdaw Upgrade Priority

Priority Upgrade Why
1 Hull Armor You can't fight if you're dead. Survivability first.
2 Broadside Cannons Your main damage dealer in every naval fight.
3 Mortar Essential for forts and legendary ships later.
4 Ram More useful now โ€” unlock via the Padre, not after legendary ships.
5 Round Shot / Crew / Heavy Shot Fill these in as resources allow.

Edward's Gear

  • Swords: Upgrade when you find better ones โ€” dual-wielding makes swords your primary weapon.
  • Pistols: Can now fire mid-combo with dual-wield. Invest in capacity upgrades.
  • Armor: Increases health pool. Worth early investment.

How to Earn Money (Reales) Fast

Best Methods

  1. Boarding ships โ€” gives double the loot of sinking. Use Spyglass to find ships with cargo you need.
  2. Captain's Lockbox โ€” new option when boarding frigates and Man-o-Wars; gives extra Reales.
  3. Kenway's Fleet โ€” captured ships generate passive income while you do other things.
  4. Fort assaults โ€” capturing a fort unlocks trade routes and points of interest.
  5. Hideout upgrades โ€” invest in the Treasure Dealer and Fisherman's Wharf for passive income.

Don't Waste Money On

  • Cosmetic ship upgrades early (focus on combat stats)
  • Buying cargo from harbormasters (plunder it instead)

Recruit Officers Early

5 Officers are available in Resynced. Three core officers provide permanent perks and can be recruited early:

Officer How to Find Perk
Lucy Baldwin Salt Key Bank โ€” sneak aboard a Man-o-War Perfect Brace (near-nullify damage with good timing)
The Padre Punta del Caracol village Ram Dash + boarding party fighter
Deadman Smith "A World Without Gold" questline Double broadside volley

Officers grant passive ship abilities โ€” they don't need to be in your active party. You don't need to finish their full questlines; they join partway through. Recruit them as early as possible.

Essential PowerPyx-Verified Tips

Restore Great Inagua Buildings Early

Start with the Harbourmaster (500 Reales) and General Store (500 Reales) โ€” they're the cheapest buildings and offer the most utility. Then prioritize Treasure Dealer (5,000 Reales) and Fisherman's Wharf (5,000 Reales) for passive income. All 7 buildings cost 23,100 Reales total; restoring them all earns the Governor trophy.

Collect Food Items for Glutton Trophy

Grab food from berry bushes, fruit trees, and other environmental sources as you explore. You need 20 food items for the Glutton trophy โ€” collecting them organically while free-roaming is far easier than hunting them down later.

Burning Ship Events (Extremely Rare)

Look for Burning Ship random events on the open sea โ€” these rare encounters have only a ~5% spawn chance and may contain chairs (needed for a trophy). If you see one, divert immediately.

Save Scum Fleet Reports

Save before accepting Kenway's Fleet reports, then reload to re-roll missions. This is essential for farming random Art Pieces from Brig Piracy missions and for getting better trade outcomes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Don't use Hidden Blade in combat โ€” it's stealth-only now. Swords are your combat weapon.
  2. Don't fight between The Twins โ€” HMS Fearless and Royal Sovereign will sandwich you. Attack from the outside.
  3. Don't ignore Tailing missions โ€” they no longer desync on failure, so they're worth attempting.
  4. Don't neglect your Fleet โ€” send ships on missions even when exploring. Free money.
  5. Don't fight legendary ships unprepared โ€” they're "stronger, tougher, meaner" than the original. Fully upgrade first.
